What is Run the Rhenoster?

Once a year, the borders of the Crocodile River Reserve open to the public for a truly special event—Run the Rhenoster, a scenic trail run or walk through one of Gauteng’s last remaining Egoli Granite Grasslands, just 20 minutes from Fourways.

This one-day event takes participants along carefully curated routes on the western side of the reserve, winding through single-track trails, quiet district roads, and along the peaceful Small Crocodile River.

Along the way, you’ll encounter some of the reserve’s most iconic natural and historic landmarks—from the geological wonder of the Black Reef Formation to the tranquil heights of Koppie Alleen, the sweeping views from Rhenosterkop, and the reflective beauty of the Rhenosterspruit Dam. You’ll also pass through Brooklands, an area rich in agricultural history, and wetlands teeming with biodiversity.

Each route—5km or 12km—features several interpretive stops where expert guides will share fascinating stories about the land, its ecology, and its deep heritage. This is more than a trail run—it’s an immersive journey through time, nature, and conservation.

A really nice, “must do” run in nature. Excellent venue for a trail run

Nicholas

2022 Run

Great run and a unique opportunity to run in that area. The run is not technical but does have a few challenging sections, and some longish but gradual climbs. Loved my morning out

It was really lovely. Well-marked, so clean and plenty of marshals. Will definitely be back. And to do it for a great cause is just amazing! Thank you to the organisers and the farm owners.

Our Feature Points for the 2025 Run/Walk

12km & 5 km Run/Walk Options

Choose between a 5km or 12km route, each designed to take you through some of the reserve’s most iconic landmarks.

At each key point, knowledgeable guides will be stationed to share fascinating insights and stories about the area—turning your walk or run into a true journey of discovery.

Black Reef Formation

Where Ancient Rocks Divide Two Worlds

This striking rocky ridge marks the boundary between two unique grassland types—Carletonville Dolomite Grassland and Egoli Granite Grassland—both rich in biodiversity and under serious threat.

The ancient Black Reef Formation runs through this area, creating dramatic outcrops that offer a glimpse into the earth’s deep geological past.

It’s a fascinating feature for both nature lovers and amateur rock geeks alike!

Brooklands

Historic Farmland with Scenic Vistas

Once a working farm, Brooklands now forms part of the Crocodile River Reserve’s protected landscape.

Its open grasslands and gentle rolling hills offer breathtaking views and a glimpse into the area’s agricultural past.

Visitors often remark on the tranquility of the space, where old stone kraals and rustling grasses speak to a slower, simpler time—now transformed into a haven for conservation and reflection.

Crocodile River

The Lifeblood of the Landscape

Nestled quietly in the reserve, Koppie Alleen (meaning “Lonely Hill”) offers a serene spot with sweeping views across the reserve’s untouched terrain.

It’s a favourite among trail runners, walkers, and photographers alike.

Whether you pause to catch your breath or just take in the beauty, this koppie offers a moment of peace and connection with nature’s quiet grandeur.

Koppie Alleen & Rhenosterkop:

Hills That Hold the Heart of the Reserve

These two iconic koppies offer more than just elevation—they’re windows into the soul of the reserve.

Koppie Alleen, meaning “Lonely Hill,” is a peaceful spot with sweeping views that trail runners, walkers, and photographers love for its quiet grandeur.

Nearby, the bold silhouette of Rhenosterkop stands as a powerful symbol—so much so that it inspired the Crocodile River Reserve’s logo. Together, they represent the wild beauty and deep significance of this protected landscape.

Wetlands

Vital Ecosystems Teeming with Biodiversity

Often overlooked, wetlands are some of the most important—and endangered—ecosystems in South Africa.

These water-rich areas support a huge variety of plant, bird, and animal life while playing a vital role in filtering water and controlling floods.

At CRR, the wetlands are alive with frogs, reeds, and birdsong, offering a perfect classroom in the wild for anyone curious about the delicate balance of life.

Rhenosterspruit Dam

A Quiet Refuge with a Quirky Past

Built in the 1970s by the wonderfully eccentric Frank Pritchard—known for his monocle, Tam O’Shanter cap, and larger-than-life personality—this dam now serves as a tranquil watering hole for the reserve’s wildlife.

Tucked in the Rhenosterspruit valley, it’s a peaceful stop along the trail where you might spot birds, antelope, or just take a quiet moment to reflect.

A little slice of history, charm, and conservation all in one.

Before you strike out on your run or walk, fuel up with something delicious!

We’ll have Die Doringbos Padstal food truck on site before and after the event, serving up tasty bites to satisfy those outdoor exercise cravings, along with fresh coffee and tea to keep you warm and smiling.

Whether you’re after a quick breakfast bite, a comforting cup of tea, or that essential morning coffee, we’ve got you covered - along with some vegetarian options too!

Just remember to bring your wallet, as food and drinks are not included in the ticket price.

Some sections of the terrain is tough Pelindaba rock and hilly. Please take it easy out there and keep your eyes open. If you do encounter a snake, stop immediately, please let it pass into the veld, and don’t approach/intimidate.
